Who we are

KBIS was first established in 1986 as a specialist bloodstock insurance provider under the trading name of Kershaw Bloodstock Insurance Services. In 1991, the company was acquired by Guy and Liz Prest, who expanded the business to include insurance cover for the riding and competition horse. At the end of 2020, KBIS was acquired by Specialist Risk Group (SRG) whose portfolio includes Lloyd’s broker Miles Smith and The Underwriting Exchange (TUE).

Over the years KBIS has grown further to include Horsebox insurance, Liability insurance and specialist equestrian Property insurance. Despite our growth we have still maintained our focus on providing a personal and efficient service, which has helped us to become the largest independent equine insurance provider in the UK.

  • Transparent – Providing clear policy terms and conditions and a straight forward claims process.
  • Affordable – Offering a range of cover levels to suit different budgets.
  • Knowledgeable – All of our team are experts in their field.
  • Passionate – We all have an active interest in the equestrian industry, with many of us owning and competing our own horses, allowing us to combine our hobby with our work.

Why choose KBIS?

KBIS’s growth and customer loyalty has been built upon a company ethos of providing excellent customer service combined with a fast, efficient and fair claims process. The majority of our customers have been recommended to us by friends, vets or by word of mouth thanks to the good reputation we have worked hard to achieve. We ensure that our policies offer comprehensive cover and are transparent, so you are clear on the cover you have in place. All of our staff have equestrian knowledge or are experts in their fields so are able to answer any concerns or queries you may have.

In addition we have always believed in trying to offer our customers continuity and so when possible, whether taking out a new policy or making a claim, if you choose, you can deal with the same person each time helping to make the process as quick and easy as possible. Importantly though, as horse owners, we understand our customers concerns and expectations and how much you value your horse and so will always do our best to work with you to achieve the best possible outcome.

Our Approach

Using only approved underwriting sources, KBIS hold exclusive contracts to provide our clients with all of the advantages of direct insurance while maintaining an independence to look after their best interests.

In many cases we can offer flexible cover options to ensure that you can purchase the best policy to suit your specific needs. Whether that is for liability insurance for a yard, cover as a freelance instructor, insurance for your property or your horse.

We work closely with industry experts as well as veterinary professionals, including the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) to ensure that the products we are offering are suitable in today’s market. KBIS were the first company to offer an option for increased cover for colic surgery, up to £7,500, after vets expressed concern about the level of insurance cover available for this type of surgery.

In addition we have always adopted a policy of sponsoring within all of the main disciplines in order to put something back into the sport which our customers enjoy. We are now involved as title sponsors of seven major series and championships, as well as supporting some of the countries biggest equestrian events such as the Badminton Horse Trials down to smaller local Riding Club and Pony Club shows.
