When did you first start riding and what was your first pony like?
Mum bought my first pony when I was 18 months old. Although I liked horses, I wasn’t as keen as mum, who was raring for me to get on board. My first pony, Misty, was well known in the local pony club and was a complete schoolmistress, who loved mounted games. I joined Pony Club when I was 3, and I had 7 fabulous years with Misty; who is still in our Pony Club today and teaching little ones, at the grand old age of 25.
Tell me about your current pony Felix.
I have had Felix since November 2017. He is a 14.2, 14 year old, grey, Connemara pony, who has evented up to Pony 1*. He is a real character on the yard, and has a range of comedy faces, especially at dinner time! I love riding him because he is full of energy and loves his job. He is never boring to ride and his exuberant personality always brings a smile to my face; learning to vault on Misty has proved useful when he is particularly bouncy! Felix had a break from competing for a few years, but is now fit and enjoying showing me the ropes of eventing!
Within eventing what is your favourite discipline?
My favourite discipline within eventing has to be XC, because when we’re galloping around a course and Felix is eating up every fence, it feels like I am flying. When I finish XC, I always have a huge smile on my face because of the fun I have had out on course- I just love it!
Which riders do you aspire to be like?
I aspire to be like Mary King, because she works very hard for every success she has got, and her longevity in eventing inspires me. Mary King would do anything when she was younger, so that she was able to ride, and would work so hard to achieve her dreams- something that I try to emulate.
What is your main aim for 2018?
My main aims for 2018, include qualifying for the Pony Club Championships, in eventing or showjumping, and to gain a double clear at BE100, which will hopefully put us in good stead to achieve a dream of mine- to be part of the BE U18 team at Frickley Park in 2019. I would also like to qualify for the NSEA National Championships, in as many classes as possible.
