Meet KBIS Preliminary Championship Winner Owen Davies

Meet KBIS Preliminary Championship Winner Owen Davies

One month on from this years British Dressage Championships, we caught up with KBIS Preliminary Championship winner Owen Davies to find out all about him and his wonderful horse Bali SD.

Tell us about your riding experience:

I have been riding ever since I was 7 years old. I have always loved caring for the horses whilst growing up and I was lucky enough to get my first pony at 13 years old. I then was hooked and decided I really liked to compete. When I was 16 my parents helped me buy my first competition horse Buddy, who I still compete today.

I always knew I wanted to follow a career in horses and I wanted to compete. Buddy helped me to decide whether this was through dressage or eventing and I competed up to BE 90 before deciding I wanted to follow a career in dressage.

Tell us about the lovely Bali SD

I bought Bali to help me pursue my career in dressage. She has been my first mare and initially, I was a little sceptical as I know mares can be temperamental. However, she has been an absolute pleasure to own for the last year and I really feel as though we have a good bond. She is currently only 6 years old so I am very excited to see what the future has in store for us both.

How did you find preparing for this year’s winter championships?

After winning the regionals on her I knew she was more than capable to do well at the nationals. Although I felt ready for the nationals, I was grateful that we had the extra time (one positive of covid) as it allowed us to make sure we were on top form for the nationals.

Was this your first winter championship?

Yes, this was my first ever nationals and definitely not the last.

Did you feel you’d done enough to take the championship once you’d finished your test?

You can never be sure about your result after you have finished the test, but she felt amazing during the test and I was definitely happy that I had come and done the best I could do.

What else have you two done together?

This was our first season together since I bought her. We have been placed in a 5 year old class and we have competed novice music at regionals. I hope to continue competing both music and straight tests with her and I am excited to see what the future holds for us both.

What are your plans for the future?

Bali is a really exciting horse and I hope that she will be the horse that can take me all the way up to Grand Prix. I wish to continue aiming towards the nationals each season and furthering my career, particularly within dressage.
