July has been another nonstop month with plenty of training and competitions; making the most of the freedom of the summer holidays!

On the first weekend of July, we headed to Brightling for the Area 11 pony club eventing qualifiers. I had April in the open and Happy in the intermediate which made for a very busy morning, I had both horses finished by 12 o’clock! April pulled out a 28 dressage and a lovely double clear to take both of our first eventing wins which qualified us directly for the pony club championships. This was a particularly rewarding result, I was thrilled with our dressage score, just shows what hard work can do! After a brilliant 33 dressage and an unlucky pole show jumping Happy finished just outside the top ten in a competitive section. He made nothing of the cross-country and it was great to have him feeling like a pro round a very decent track.

We were then off for some dressage practice with Happy the weekend after. After some valuable dressage lessons during the week, we set off in good spirits for our two novice tests. Unfortunately, our first arena was next to the cross-country schooling field, which Happy promptly spotted… As he now seems to be working out what his new job entails, he thought he’d rather go cross country schooling and did a good job of portraying that to the judge! Thankfully he managed to pull himself together for a lovely second test and we could show off everything we’d been practising in our lessons to pick up a close 3rd in a very big class which I was thrilled with.

Next was a trip up to ValeView for lessons with Caroline Moore with both horses. With area show jumping competitions coming up, we focused on building confidence over some bigger courses and had some very valuable cross country schooling sessions. We were definitely pushed out of our comfort zones with some very testing lines and combinations but learnt huge amounts to put into practice at upcoming competitions!

Area 11 pony club show jumping qualifiers came next with April in the open and Happy in the intermediate. It was a very busy weekend if a little nerve-racking with some very large tracks! However, our practice earlier in the week stood us in good stead with Happy finishing 8th individually and helping the team to a win. April also picked up an individual 6th and we were thrilled to pick up another team win meaning both horses are qualified to show jump at the championships, which is very exciting, it's going to be a busy week! It was also great to have both horses winning the individual tack and turnout competitions for their respective classes, a very successful weekend!

The following week saw something a little different, with a week of stable management training at area 11 boot camp. It was great to meet lots of new people and I learnt lots over the week. I was thrilled to pass my lunging test at the end of the week and it’s put me well on the way to hopefully taking my AH pony club test in the future.

To finish off a busy month we headed over to Chilham horse trials with April in the novice and Happy in the 100+. April tried super hard for me all day, scoring 33.3 in a tricky dressage test, followed by another double clear round a decent track which I was over the moon with. A couple of time faults after an unplanned long route cost us a top ten placing but I couldn’t have asked any more from her and I am thrilled with how she’s going at the moment. Happy wasn’t to be outdone, picking up a respectable 35 in the dressage, a green pole show jumping and a fab clear inside the time cross country, clearly finding it all too easy! To top the day off, he managed to pick up a 9th place, I’m very excited to step him up to novice for our next run. It’s very rewarding to feel how quickly he’s progressing- hard to believe we’ve only had him for about 3 months!

Reflecting on a very successful month, I would like to thank KBIS for their support. My horses and I are always smartly turned out in the kit which we have very generously been provided with and the extra lessons have been invaluable in helping us to achieve our results this month. Looking ahead to August, I am very excited to be going up to the Pony Club Championships with both horses, we’ve got plenty of hard work to put in before then however and I’m looking forward to letting you know how I get on!

Until next time,

Ella x
