Alexia's March Blog

Alexia and Felix

The event season is now well under way, and this month has been very successful with numerous outings for Felix and I and two trips out of the XC start box!

We began March with a 7th place at Isleham BE90open, which I covered in my previous blog. After a super first event, we were rearing to go at Poplar Park BE100u18. We were very lucky that it ran due to Poplar’s lovely sandy ground because other BE’s across the country were cancelled that weekend. The sandy ground was brilliant for the horses, but in the lorry park, it was 90% mud, which led to us having to be towed in at 8 in the morning! Felix did a sweet test to score 34.3 which lots of room for improvement as he was a bit tense. He then followed this by a foot perfect double clear inside the time. He felt so well and fit which led to me running him a bit fast and getting a little carried away, and finishing exactly 15 seconds under the optimum time, almost leading to a few speeding penalties!

We finished 9th in a very competitive section- I was over the moon!

The following weekend, I took part in the Pony Club Area Quiz for my branch. The competition went well and much to our team’s surprise we WON and qualified for the National Quiz Championships at the Dengie Winter Championships in April. I also had a chance to qualify for the Dengie Winger League Championships the next weekend- this time in the dressage. I qualified for the Areas in the preliminary rounds in October. Prior to the dressage Areas, I had two brilliant dressage lessons which helped me and Felix immensely and we brushed up on our test movements. In the Novice test, Felix was a little tense and spooky in the arena but we scored 79% and secured 4th place just missing out on qualifying for the Championships by 0.4%. Then, in the Intermediate, we managed to do a much nicer and smarter test and got 70% to WIN!! So, we are now off to the Dengie Winter Championships in both Quiz and dressage- It will be a very busy weekend!

Finally, at the end of March we headed to the KBIS XC Arena at Aston-Le-Walls for a Pony Club clinic with Nigel Taylor. We brushed up on our jumping skills and my position and lower leg, and then even had a chance to have a play on the grass at Aston too.

I hope that any NSEA members have entered the KBIS Bursary because it really is the opportunity of a lifetime and has aided me so much in the past year. The support from KBIS has been invaluable and helped Felix and I progress. Head to the KBIS website to enter now!

In April, I am looking forward to the Dengie Pony Club Winter Championships, Pony Club Eventing Camp at Great Witchingham, Pony Club Talent pathway selection day and Horseheath BE100open.

Until the next time,

Lexi x
