Alexia's Feburary Blog

Alexia February Blog

February has been full of training, all in the exciting lead up to our first event of the season at Isleham at the start of March! This blog is going to be a bit shorter than normal because most of the training this month has consisted of Felix’s least favourite activity- dressage!

We have had lots of lessons to improve Felix’s way of going and my riding. I have had numerous training sessions with Paul Friday and Amanda Malins which have definitely helped our flatwork . We have been working on ensuring that Felix comes round and low into my contact and I have also been practising some higher level moves than that are in my tests- such as travers, shoulder in and half pass. These new movements have helped Felix to engage his hindquarters and have then consequently made him push through from behind into the contact.

After feeling very prepared from our series of flatwork training we headed off to our first event of the season at Isleham. After walking the courses the excitement was building and I couldn’t wait to get going after months of preparation. Following a bit of a mind-blowing walk to the dressage warm-up for Felix past the XC course, he soon settled down to do a very smart test. We scored 31.8 and I felt that my hard work had now paid off! After a short break, we headed to showjumping. We did an ok round, but Felix was really enjoying the round (perhaps a bit too much !) and we had an unlucky pole. This excitement was expected though, as it was our first showjumping round on grass since October. Finally, we had XC. The main goal of XC was for me to have total control over the whole course to make sure that Felix knew that he wasn’t the boss and I was. We achieved this goal perfectly and even came home with 1.2 time faults along with a fabulous clear round. I was even more pleased to find out that we had come 8th in our BE90open section.

This month, I also heard the news that the KBIS NSEA Training  Bursary is OPEN! I have had the most brilliant year with the support of KBIS and although my time with the Bursary isn’t quite up yet, I urge anyone who is an NSEA member to apply now and get their entries in, to be in with a chance of winning this once in a lifetime opportunity!

In March, I am looking forward to Poplar Park BE100u18, Pony Club Quiz and a Pony Club arena XC clinic at Aston le Walls. Hopefully, after a good first set on results at Isleham, we are on the right track for good results in the rest of our events this season- fingers crossed!

 Until the next time,
