Finn's February Blog: Getting ready to go eventing!

It’s been a very exciting and productive month for Jack and I. We started off with a British Showjumping show at South View which turned out to be the only competition of the month for us. Jack jumped a great round having the last fence in the newcomers which was annoying because it was rider error. Then we had two rails in the 1.10 Fox hunter, maybe getting a little quick when we tried a slightly different bit so I wasn’t too worried.

Following this, we had a great dressage lesson with Hannah Esberger where Jack tried really hard doing all the tricky movements, such as canter leg yield, shoulder in and I felt it really developed his trot work.

A few days later I flew to Dubai with my school on a cricket tour and Jack had a good week of hacking and schooling with Mum. It was a great experience, however, I did miss the ponies!

When I got back we drove straight across to a pre-season eventing camp at Somerford with top trainers. My first lesson was a show jump lesson with Bianca Mortimer, Jack jumped great and we concentrated on lines and rhythm. Then in the afternoon, I had a dressage lesson with Mary Thelwall where Jack felt on top form producing some great work. We even managed some canter half pass! I felt learning to do this was extremely useful because he felt he had a lot bigger trot following this!

The next day I had another show jump lesson and Jack was rather lively but felt awesome over the fences! We worked on keeping the speed the same but making the distances by lengthening the stride. Then came to our last lesson of the camp, which was XC. Jack was so straight and bold, this was great preparation for Epworth but now this has been cancelled because of all this snow, Oasby next weekend.

With the 2018/2019 KBIS NSEA Bursary now open, I cannot recommend entering it enough. It has helped me achieve my goals with money for more training, without this money I’m not sure I would have achieved these goals. Then the kit is on another level, I only thought I would get a cap and a jacket; never mind an amazing travel rug, gilet, polo shirt, cross country skin, hat silk, beanie hat and even sunglasses! On top of all this, getting lessons from one of the best xc riders in the world at the great facility of Aston le Walls. It really is a unique opportunity.

Until next time,
