The Kbis Be Bright - Be Safe Campaign
From a look at Kbis’s claims statistics one in 1500 horses is involved in a serious road accident every year. This
equates to about two a day. When less serious accidents are taken into consideration, current recording methods show
eight incidents a day, whilst anecdotal evidence suggests up to 29 collisions a day.
Kbis has launched the campaign, "Be Bright, Be Safe", to encourage riders to
wear fluorescent and reflective clothing, to think ahead and leave other road users with a good impression of riders.
To encourage more riders to wear fluorescent clothing, to increase visibility, and
reflective clothing, to catch car headlights in dull conditions, Kbis is giving away 700 arm and leg bands.
Kbis safety tips for riders
- Wear fluorescent and reflective clothing
- Plan ahead – try to ride in good light conditions - try and have a companion for
difficult or young horses
- Look behind regularly to check whether a car is being held up
- Keep your eyes peeled for anything that will spook your horse. Do not attempt to pass it
if a car is overtaking
- Look at every car that passes, smile and say "thank you"
- Check your insurance policy for personal liability
Kbis safety tips for motorists
- Beware horses abruptly jumping in your path. They can be more scared of a plastic bag in
the hedge than a car
- Slowing down to pass horses will probably lengthen your journey time by ten seconds –
this could save a life
- When driving on country lanes be prepared for horses, especially round blind bends
- Campaign for more bridleways and off-road riding for horses!
