July 2006
The Ups And Downs Of Eventing
Well what can I say about this month…? It has
definitely been a tough month with mixed emotions on the yard.
July started well with Dunauger going to the Barbury Castle CIC***
event. He was clear cross country and finished in the top half which
saw us to qualify for Blenheim Horse Trials held at the end of
August. I was really excited about qualifying and was really looking
forward to competing there. However after returning home from
Barbury Castle it was upsetting to find out that Dunauger was
injured badly with a stress fracture. Dunauger will now have to miss
the rest of the season to recover and miss out on going to Blenheim.
Unfortunately there is nothing anyone could have done to prevent his
injury.
He has been eventing now for four years and this is his first major
injury, also we are quite lucky that it is a fracture and not tendon
or ligament damage as this could be reoccurring and problematic in
the future. Dunauger will be rested until the end of September when
he will have to go back to the vets for further examination. Once he
is given the all clear I will be working on show jumping and
dressage in order to get him fit and ready for the spring events
next year.
With the ground being hard my youngster, Forget Me Not, has been
ridden at home this month and we are working towards our next outing
in August. She is looking well now and her confidence is growing.
August and September are looking like busy months for Forget Me Not
so now I will have to concentrate on her and look for some good
results at the forthcoming events.
With eventing being such a risky and testing sport the ‘ups’ come
with the ‘downs’ and it is important to try and stay positive. I
hope next month can be a much more positive one, until then – happy
riding!
