Shining Stars
KBIS Starchaser (Star) and KBIS Starlet (Doris) put in true star performances at last weekend’s international Barbury Castle Horse Trials. Competing in the CIC***, in the experience hands of Izzy Taylor, who finished third at Bramham CCI*** three weeks earlier, they produced convincing double clears in what was very much a star-studded-field.
Performing their dressage tests late Friday afternoon in Barbury’s impressive main arena, they both produced scores in the fifties, Doris on 51.2 and Star on 52.4, putting them in the top third of the section as they headed into the show jumping the following day.
Out of over one hundred starters in Saturday’s showjumping just less than half jumped clear, of which too much delight Star and Doris were two. This pushed them up the placings considerably, with Doris moving just behind Olympic bound Kristina Gifford and Miners Frolic!
Sunday’s cross country provided an exciting finish, with the top twenty
combinations running in reverse order. Barbury’s spectacular viewing course meant that you could view all but a couple of fences without having to move and despite the wind the day brought in a huge crowd. Star was first to go, and as he entered the start box the course had already caught out some experienced combinations. The double of corners, sunken road and quarry proving to be particularly influential. Star jumped round beautifully though, and Izzy did a great job to retain his enthusiasm in the technical combinations, which has in the past caused the occasional glance off. He crossed the finish line with 9.2 time penalties and to an applauding team of KBIS supporters!
Doris took to the course an hour later and followed in Star’s footsteps producing a good clear. Deceptively quicker across country she picked up 6.5 time penalties to finish in 13th place. With Star finishing in 24th place, it was a great result for both horses.
Barbury was just their third run of the season, having both had time off due to minor injuries. For Star it was also his first attempt at this level. They will now head to Aston Le Walls in a fortnight where they are entered for the Advanced.
