Horsebox Insurance

What cover is available?

There are two different options available for horsebox Insurance:

1.Third Party, Fire and Theft

2.Comprehensive

The two options alter with regard to the loss of or damage to your vehicle. Third Party Fire and Theft will not cover you for accidental damage, malicious damage or vandalism and it will not include windscreen damage. With a comprehensive policy you will be fully covered.

With KBIS both cover options will provide cover for your Liability to others and Foreign use, i.e. trips abroad.

How many drivers can I have insured on my policy?

Most insurance policies will cover anyone to drive the lorry over the age of 25 years, (with the required licence). Anyone driving the horsebox under the age of 25 years will have to be specific named drivers on the policy.

BACK

Are there any age restrictions on the insurance?

The driver must be 21 years or over in order to be covered by the insurance policy.

You may find that you will have an additional excess to pay if a young or inexperienced person was driving at the time of the incident.

Can I travel horses other than my own in my lorry?

You can transport horses other than your own in the lorry as long as you are not doing so as part of a business or charging a specific fee per trip.  If you are using it as part of a business or charging people then you will need to have a hire and reward policy.

If you often find yourself providing ‘lifts’ to shows it is worth making sure the horses you are transporting are insured in case of an injury during transit. You can take out separate cover, which will cover your Legal Liability for injury or accidental death of a horse not belonging to you.

Can I get breakdown cover with my insurance?

Breakdown cover is normally offered under a separate policy; at KBIS we offer a very competitive breakdown policy that will provide you with both home and roadside service, recovery service and emergency travel and accommodation. Further information about breakdown cover can be found on our Download page.

BACK

Can I take my lorry abroad?

Foreign use covers you if you are going abroad with your lorry, but you must speak to your insurance company before travelling abroad as they will need to agree to provide cover and may require an extra premium in order to cover the benefits.

What do I need to make my insurance company aware of?

When taking out a policy there are some key points which you should make the insurance company aware of. By providing your insurance company with all of the facts you will ensure that you are getting the appropriate cover and it may help to reduce your premium.

Average Milage, you may be able to take out a cheaper limited milage policy.

If you have a tracker fitted to your lorry as this may reduce your premium.

Whether the lory had living accommodation as this may alter the cover.

If you use the horsebox for any other uses other than transporting horses.

Any motoring convictions or accidents, non disclosure may affect any claim.
